3.0 Introduction

Besides open access journals and open access repositories, there are many other innovative approaches to openness that you as a library professional should be aware of. In this unit, we make an attempt to list some of these to assist you understand and articulate the developments in the area of open access to education and research. Open Access institutional repositories and Open Access journals are just two approaches to ‘openness’. The policy document titled “Open ‘as the default modus operandi for research and higher education”89, that was produced by the e-InfraNet project in early 2013, follows a very broad approach to Open Access.
